The Center for Social Rehabilitation of Children “Casa Gavroche” is a shelter for children living and working on the streets and other categories of children at risk from Chisinau. “Casa Gavroche” was created by the Municipal Department for the Protection of Children’s Rights and the Association for the Re-socialization of Street Children, within a project financially supported by UNICEF Moldova, Social Investment Fund in Moldova and Chisinau City Administration. The creation of the Center “Casa Gavroche” was imposed by the need of diversifying the range of services provided to children in difficult circumstances and their families.
The Center is an open and friendly institution that will offer temporary shelter, food, care, schooling and learning activities to children at risk. Besides children that live and work on the streets the project addresses abandoned children or children at risk of abandonment, children that are abused in their family, children with behavioral problems or children at risk. Each child will benefit from psycho-pedagogical counseling and an individualized re-socialization plan with the involvement of a social assistant, a pedagogue and a psychologist.
“Casa Gavroche” has 4 bedrooms with a total of 18 beds, a hall, a computer room and a gym. The duration of a child’s stay in the Center will not be longer than 6 months; during this period there will be considered possibilities for the child’s reintegration into the biological family, school and community. If reintegration into the natural family is not possible, other forms of placement and protection will be considered, trying to avoid the child’s institutionalization. Children placed temporarily in “Casa Gavroche” will attend neighboring schools and benefit from social relations and an environment similar to a family environment.
The main role of the volunteers is to assist the employees in work and to give support to the children in every day activities of the Centre. Everyday duties of volunteers are: – help in preparing a snack; – help with homework; – help in organizing and running recreational and interpersonal games; – help in cleaning up rooms when activities finished; – picking up children from the school; – read stories and songs in easy language; – participate in painting and crafts workshops – participate in theatre and music groups.
