Location: s-Hertogenbosch – The Netherlands
Period: 01/01/2018 – 31/12/2018
Deadline: 20 September 2017
Vicki Brown House is looking for a pro-active volunteer to attract more youth through organizing creative activities and marketing (social media).
The Vicki Brown House, established in 1992, is an independent, non-profit social cultural organisation dedicated as a meeting home for adults and children with cancer and their relatives and friends in the Netherlands. In this house, attention is paid to the psychosocial aspects of cancer. The purpose of the meeting place is to bring people together and offer activities such as relaxation, movement, creativity, education, health and beauty and personal development. These activities aim to contribute to more quality of life. It is not a treatment institute but an informal meeting place. The Vicki Brown House is a volunteer organisation. Vicki Brown (23 August 1940 – 16 June 1991) was an English pop, rock, and contemporary classical singer. She is best known for her membership of both The Vernons Girls and The Breakaways, and as one of the UK’s most enduring backing vocalists. She was the first wife of fellow singer and musician Joe Brown and mother of the singer Sam Brown. She died in 1991 from breast cancer and her positive attitude is an example and inspiration to others with cancer.
For more than 25 years, Vicki Brown house works with volunteers. They educate them and coach them to work at the Vicki Brown House. As they give psychosocial assistance to cancer patients, they are very social towards people. The managing director Jacqueline Crooijmans is a cultural anthropologist and has management experience in the non-profit field for many years. Moreover, she is a lecturer. She will be the supervisor of the EVS volunteer. About 60 volunteers work at the Vicki Brown house. The main goal of the project (EVS volunteer) is to attract more youth to the Vicki Brown House in ‘s-Hertogenbosch by organising activities such as Artistic assistance for children from 7 to 12 years and from 12 to 16 years. Creativity is used as an aid to convey feelings, fears or desires in a pleasant way. In this way, the Vicki Brown House tries to relate, understand, and place a thorough experience. During the meetings, the children make use of artistic means, such as drawing, painting and carpentry. Stories, poems and music, adapted to the age and interest of the child, support the assignments. Based on the work done, conversations are conducted, where the children listen to each other and recognize each other. The fellow contact is an important part of the meetings. For youth of 14-18 years other activities are organised, see http://www.vbrownhuis.nl/jeugd/jongeren-14-18-jaar/. Moreover, Vicki Brown house could provide help to migrants and minorities, to improve diversity and inclusion for cancer patients and attract volunteers in this field.

The volunteer will live in the de Hooghe Clock with other EVS volunteers, ’s-Hertogenbosch (one hour from Amsterdam). This is a new development where elderly, young, autistic, students and top athletes live. Everyone is expected to do volunteer work for a few hours a week in the house such as help-desk service, reception and organizing a bingo evening. This will also enhance the integration of the volunteer into the local community. For the Hooghe Clock, the volunteer will bring a different dimension. To the muncipality of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the volunteer will give additional dynamics. Through improving the sharing of knowledge and non formal learning in general, people make better decisions, innovate more and are more involved into the society and have compassion with other cultures.
