Primary School De Schalm is looking for a volunteer who will assist two experienced, native English speakers within the school by teaching English.
De Schalm Primary School uses the International Primary Curriculum (IPC), this is a comprehensive , thematic, creative curriculum for 6-12 years olds, with a clear process of learning and with specific learning goals for every subject, for international mindedness and for personal learning. As there are 21 different spoken languages within the school the parents association see English as high priority within the school and promote intercultural projects so the children are more world aware. As an IPC school we are also connected through eTwinning in Europe. This is a learning platform for teachers where knowledge is shared through best practices.
There are huge opportunities within the school for the right volunteer. The EVS volunteer will assist the two experienced, native English speakers within the school by teaching English. This will take place during class lessons, at lunch breaks and for extra hands such as reading and further small group activities. Furthermore, the volunteer can set up projects for an eTwinning knowledge exchange. For example, in the past we have had a group of children from 4 to 6 years old who have created a book about the tradition of “Sinterklaas” and the children in Malta who wrote about their traditions with Christmas. Children really enjoyed exchanging and learning about different cultures.
Moreover, there is a possibilty to be involved with an Early English Project ‘s-Hertogenbosch, where the EVS volunteer can join planning ideas, observe or even teach lessons in other schools as well as taking part in a play with other volunteers.
The EVS volunteer will develop new activities such as playing games during short breaks and lunch breaks. Ideas for this can be taken from the foundations TEAMUP that is a cooperation of War Child, Unicef and Save the Children. Depending on the interest and talents of the volunteer, he/she can help the professional with cultural activities for example, music, dance, act, craftsmanship or physical education. During the summer holidays the EVS volunteer will assist with summercamp(s), such as Jeugd Aktief Week, preparing the week and during the week be a groupleader of children (10-12 years). Furthermore, there will be a possibility to help with the “Summerschool is Fun”, a summerschool for youth from 12-18 years old. In advance he or she can participate with brainstorming about the programm and during the summer assist with the activities and teach English.

The volunteer will live in the de Hooghe Clock with other EVS volunteers, ’s-Hertogenbosch (one hour from Amsterdam). This is a new development where elderly, young, autistic, students and top athletes live. Everyone is expected to do volunteer work for a few hours a week in the house such as help-desk service, reception and organizing a bingo evening. This will also enhance the integration of the volunteer into the local community. For the Hooghe Clock, the volunteer will bring a different dimension. To the muncipality of ‘s-Hertogenbosch, the volunteer will give additional dynamics. Through improving the sharing of knowledge and non formal learning in general, people make better decisions, innovate more and are more involved into the society and have compassion with other cultures. This could be the long term effect of the project for the volunteer, the children of primary school De Schalm, residents of the Hooghe Clock and inhabitants of ‘s-Hertogenbosch.
